Hailing from Kota Kinabalu, Stephen started learning the cello under the tutelage of Yap Ling and Julie Dessureault, and has performed with various ensembles and orchestras throughout the world. He was described as “a formidable cellist” (Benjamin Zander) and an “avid storyteller” (Jassen Todorov). His other mentors also include Thomas Duran, Leonid Shukaev, Guillaume Chilemme, Ruth Rosique, Lee Yin Hwa, Asier Polo, Alexander Buzlov and many others. His string quartet, DSCH Quartet, has recently won the first prize at the Académie-Festival des Arcs in France as the best chamber music group.
As a versatile cellist who is passionate in all genres of music, Stephen has worked with singers like Siti Nurhaliza, Sheila Majid, Dayang Nurfaizah, Winnie Ho and many others. He was also involved in TV productions for Astro (Classic Golden Melody 2016, 2018) and TV3 (Anugerah Juara Lagu 2015–2018); theatre productions such as PAN Productions’ That’s Entertainment (2018) and Into the Woods (2016); as well as occasional appearances in jazz venues like No Black Tie and Forbidden City KL. Stephen is currently teaching in BAPA, British International School KL, and UCSI University.
